Hideously torturous weapons demonstration - Part 1Part 1/4 of a half an hour long demonstration of medieval weaponry throughout the ages. My role in the demonstration was that of "willing volunteer". About 25 different weapons were used, every single one of them real steel and either the same weight or even heavier than the originals would have been. Involved in the event were the Company of 1415, the Badger Rampant group and the Milites de Bec, and the event was the third annual Baddlesmere Lees medieval festival - the best event of the year, despite the beating I took! Most of the blows delivered were not full strength and so the demonstration was slightly safer than it looked. However some participants were a little more enthusiastic than others, and so occasionally the strikes would easily have broken bones had it not been for armour, of which I was wearing plenty. For those who are interested, I wore a padded leather jack, a coat of mail, steel shoulder, thigh, elbow and gut plates, and a brigandine on top. This meant that most of the hits to my chest and stomach didn't hurt too much, but a lot of the ones on the arms and backs of legs - of which there were quite a few - left some big bruises.
