Plot Summary: Not even her distant, cruel father, the Minister of Censorship (Rutger Hauer) can prevent her from writing award-winning poems, one of which -- "The child who was shot dead by soldiers in Nyanga" - was recited by Nelson Mandela in 1994 at the opening of the South-African parliament.
Like her American counterpart Sylvia Plath, Ingrid Jonker was consumed by a desire for all-encompassing love. Jonker's was so strong that it overwhelmed her many lovers (often fellow writers) who were themselves looking for time and stability to write their own books. After breaking down in dark, rainy Amsterdam, she returns to the wind-swept beaches and her close circle of friends in Capetown. The ocean beckons, promising respite from her inner torment.
