Taxco de Alarcón (usually referred to as simply "Taxco") is a small city and municipality located in the Mexican state of Guerrero. The name Taxco is most likely derived from the Nahuatl word tlacheco, which means "place of the ballgame." However, one interpretation has the name coming from the word tatzco which means "where the father of the water is," due to the high waterfall near the town center on Atatzin Mountain. "De Alarcón" is in honor of writer Juan Ruiz de Alarcón who was a native of the town. Like many municipalities in central Mexico, the municipality's coat-of-arms is an Aztec glyph. This glyph is in the shape of a Mesoamerican ballcourt with rings, players and skulls, derived from the most likely source of Taxco's name.

Son nom initial était Tetelcingo et fut renommé Real de Taxco en 1570. Il vient de la langue náhuatl Tlachco qui signifie « lieu du jeu de balle » . Elle devint enfin Taxco de Alarcón en 1872 en hommage au dramaturge Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, natif de cette commune.

Taxco de Alarcón è il centro minerario più antico del continente, motivo per il quale è conosciuto per le sue miniere d'argento che esistono dall'epoca coloniale. La tradizione degli artigiani della lavorazione dell'argento è riconosciuta a livello mondiale. Al giorno d'oggi, nonostante tutto, le miniere non sono più un'attività redditizia. Dal 1800 la popolazione di Taxco inizió a estrarre l'argento, e al momento non ne rimane molto, a causa dello scioglimento della miniera e per l'enorme estrazione avvenuta in passato.
