COMMENTARY | In continuous ramping up of rhetoric, Iran again has fired a diplomatic shot across the bow at the U.S. This time, the threat came from the Iranian ambassador to Russia, who asserted Iran has the unchallenged ability to attack the U.S. anywhere in the world and succeed.
Seyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said his country is united behind its leaders and capable of retaliating against the U.S., Reuters reported. That's wonderful diplomatic hyperbole, but in reality Iran would receive such a punishing first strike that the few options left would be limited to terror strikes in places where it has secret cells.
Sajjadi's warning comes on the heels of Sunday's warning by a senior-level commander of the Revolutionary Guard that made equally inane threats to attack U.S. interests, bases and allies. All of these military threats come with the assurance Iran will not fire the first shot. Does it think it will get a second chance?
Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Joint Chiefs Chairman, told Israel last month the U.S. would not participate in an attack against Iran that was not coordinated and jointly approved, Inter Press Service reported. That warning might prove true in the beginning of any conflict, but everything changes the moment Iran launches against Israel. Joint defense agreements would require the U.S. to aid Israel. Any retaliatory attack by Iran on Israeli cities could only result in an aggressive U.S. response.
That's further proof of how easy a conflict with Iran could start with no one wanting it in the first place. The rhetoric needs to come down a few steps before the parties are politically, militarily or honor-bound to react. The end result will not be good for either Iran or Israel.
