Then World War 3. Peak oil was reached in or about 2005. Big oil knew oil production would inevitably plateau and then decline. They wouldn't know exactly when peak oil hit until the world oil output data for consecutive years showed plateau in production despite all efforts to ramp up output. Without abundant oil, there can be no continued global economic expansion. Big oil interests suppressed alternative energy. Alternative energy that relies on rare earth minerals is not an alternative however, neither is wind turbines, solar or nuclear. Lack of cheap oil is a major game changer for cultures that have been built around cheap oil. Oil is not going to run out overnight, but that which is available becomes increasingly more expensive to extract. End of cheap oil will be a disaster for most people. And military of powerful Western countries are right on top of the oil situation. Civilians will get cut off from supplies as is being done with 3 refineries closing on US East Coast reducing East Coast refining capacity by over 50%. Plus a 495,000 bpd refinery in St. Croix is closing which was a major supplier to East Coast. Oil consumption must be slowed to extent for as long as possible the inevitable - lack of oil to meet world demand and oil so high in price that few can afford it.
