American lounge singer Sonny King was born Luigi Antonio Schiavone on April 1, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. Sonny had no formal voice training. He learned from his lyric tenor father, Georgie King, who performed at the Paramount Club in New York City. Among his mentors were vaudeville greats Al Jolson and Sophie Tucker. King started out as a bouncer and bar manager and once served as a sparring partner for boxer Rocky Marciano. When a Sahara executive saw King's act at the Copacabana, he asked him to come west. King moved to Las Vegas in the early50's and was a fixture on the strip and local clubs until his death. Blessed with a powerful voice and a quick wit, Sonny King could charm and entertain young and old. He was the sidekick of Jimmy Durante for 28 years, and they appeared together on the Ed Sullivan Show five times in the 1960s. King shared a New York apartment with Dean Martin when the two were struggling entertainers, and is credited with introducing Martin to a young comedian Jerry Lewis. Though not an official member, he was close friends with many Rat Pack entertainers and Sinatra asked King to appear appeared in the Rat Pack movies "Sergeants 3", 1962 and "Robin and the Seven Hoods", 1964. He died on February 3, 2006, in Las Vegas, Nevada of cancer, aged 83. In former days everyone talked about the Rat Pack and Sonny. Yes, it's true that King was the unofficial fifth man of the Rat Pack. He would sometimes substitute for any of the original who may be ill, working somewhere else or just not able to perform. When the Pack was appearing in the Sands Hotel Copa Room Las Vegas, Sonny would always be booked into the lounge. Rat Pack leader Frank Sinatra gave King the nickname "Lounge Giant". Dean Martin, roomed with Sonny in New York in the formative days of their careers, was as close to him as anyone could be. Notable record by Sonny King "I cried for you". Scopitone made a video with this track, the film was made to be played on the Scopitone audio/visual jukebox that was popular in the mid-1960s.
