MUNROS: Sgurr Nan Coireachanwww.onetruemedia.com GLENFINNAN: From the carpark the private road heads up Glenfinnan under the now famous viaduct. Our last visit to the Glenfinnan Estate resulted in a hasty retreat from the summit of Sgurr Thuilm as the weather dramatically changed, so this time it was just the plod up the 956m Sgurr nan Coireachan that was required. Both mountains in the Glenfinnan horseshoe lie just outwith the Rough Bounds of Knoydart, but are similar in terrain underfoot. The views from the summits of both Munros are excellent as you would expect, particularly westwards along Loch Morar towards Rum and Skye. The nearby 909m Corbett, Streap, on the opposite side of the glen is also accessible from this vicinity-- (must consider doing this next time). The hill separates Glen Finnan from Glen Dubh Lighe and can be tackled from either side. Regardless, its final knife-edge approach looks a bit of a scramble. Likewise, so does Sgurr nan Coireachan, but not if you manage to stay on the proper summit path! We followed a guy in front of us who took the more exhilarating summit approach. All such difficulties were avoided on the descent by taking the easier 'tourist' route. Just to the south of Sgurr nan Coireachan lies another Corbett, the 796m Sgurr an Utha. One approach for this retiring mountain is from Glenfinnan station. Anyone heading up Sgurr Thuilm at the moment [May 2012] should note that the bridge on that approach is down, so it will involve a bit of a splash, although there is ...
